Some pics from our time in Port Mac.
Got in about 5:30pm and took a couple of hours to setup.
Then we unwound with a nice dinner thursday evening at the hotels restaurant Zebu.
Seafood all the way prior to a BBQ comp has become tradition.
The plating is exceptional, inspirational.... good when you're heading into a comp the next day
Wakey, wakey hands of snakey! Such a lovely spot Port Macquarie... absolutely gorgeous!
First fire on the YS1500
Later friday evening after all the preparation had been done and the Boston butts hit the smoker, it was time to unwind with my better half, Beaver and Canuck with a stunning NZ Pinot. (Yes Dave, that is Pinot in Bordeaux glasses)
Later in the evening... I mean probably around 4am at Hillbilly Wes' camp... We had built an impressive fire to keep warm and had Shane ThinBlueLine on the phone
Good times, good people! Great to catch up with old buddies and make some new ones. Nice to meet Gary and Kart76 from the forum and anyone else I missed.
While I am here, I'd like to congratulate:
The Meat Sweats on their 2nd Grand Champion title here
Mike Rose aka Bad Ass BBQ for his brisket win and Reserve Grand Champion title
Jester for pulling the lamb category win and an impressive 4th outright
Gary and the Smoke kings boys did well outright too at 5th!
Beaver and Canuck with the 3rd in Lamb and respectable 11/45 outright
I got to say, in the last 12 months alone I have upped my game a lot and that is just keeping me at the front of the pack with these guys ^^ of course we go to win and that isn't always possible, and you've gotta love what they do because they're also pushing the envelope and it makes you push and push and you are cooking better for it!
At the end of the day the difference is minute, like 1-2% between the top teams! That just shows the amount of skill and work that is being put into even the smallest details, because that it is where comps are won. No one deserves
to win either, let me assure you these guys earn
Thanks to Dave & Darren at Grill Pro/Yoder for the continued support and Rich Gunner for stepping up to back me also! I've also received some healthy advice from some other friends who shall remains anonymous for now... but thanks, you know who you are!
Till next time
