Hi All, looking at some fittings for building a couple of UDS. Just wondering if anyone has used Galv/Zinc plated fittings for the air intakes/Exhaust? I was looking at Brass or Stainless for obvious reasons but was wondering if the indirect heat transfer to the fittings would effect the the zinc and in turn the cook?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Zine melts around 400°c. I was surprised to see the gal dripping of my potbelly flue on the first burn.
Gal fumes are toxic AF.
Just a thought, what if you were to throw the fittings into a fire for 20 minutes to burn off the gal, then wire wheel back to smooth and recoat with potbelly back paint.
I haven't tried this, might be worth an experiment with one piece.

Yep... definitely not my first choice... Burning off the zinc/Galv would probably work however.

Not sure the heat would even approach 200c on the side of the drum. I have a Big Poppa DIY Drum smoker kit I am building so will get that cranking and check out the thermal ranges at that area of the drum. Thanks for your advice. :)

The gal could start fuming at lower temps. Not something you want near food.
Worth finding an alternative if you can.
Try the smaller independent hardware stores. I find them better for fittings and fixtures than the big green club house.
