I thought that Bernie Sanders meme was on point. I actually stole it from Glen E. Friedman's blog

It's funny sometimes how life comes full circle. In BBQ I have always been considered weird and eccentric but in the punk rock scene I have always been considered polite and respectful. Different values I guess

In the malestrom that has and always will be my life there is a single thought, a strand of consciousness, the undeniable fact of who and what you truly are and to hear it so beautifully articulated through song, word and sometimes dance is liberating. I was 14 when i first heard this song and it means as much to me now that I am 41

I was so wasted
I was a hippie
I was a burnout
I was a dropout
I was out of my head
I was a surfer
I had a skateboard
I was so heavy man, I lived on the strand
I was so wasted
I was so fucked up
I was so messed up
I was so screwed up
I was out of my head
I was so jacked up
I was so drunk up
I was so knocked out, I was out of my head
I was so wasted I was wasted.

When I first heard this band I KNEW they were from Melbourne. I was wrong. They are from Albury in NSW but moved to Melbourne to further their career.

That's better!!

There is no reason why I should like this band but I do. Their quirky indy pop sound just screams Melbourne to me and whenever I listen to them I am reminded of this Brilliant, eclectic, brave, beautiful, esoteric and scummy city that it is now my privilege to call home

If there is to be any conversation on women in rock and roll or more especially punk rock then you NEED to talk about The Slits. What these women did was amazing and revolutionary

https://youtu.be/ZyXGblps64M

Don't create
Don't rebel
Have intuition
Can't decide

Typical girls get upset too quickly
Typical girls can't control themselves
Typical girls are so confusing
Typical girls, you can always tell
Typical girls don't think too clearly
Typical girls are unpredictable, predictable

Typical girls try to be
Typical girls very well
Typical girls try to be
Typical girls very well, well

Typical girls are looking for something
Typical girls fall under spells
Typical girls buy magazines
Typical girls feel like hell
Typical girls worry about spots, fat
And natural smells, stinky fake smells

Typical girls try to be
Typical girls very well, well

Don't create
Don't rebel
Have intuition
Don't drive well

Typical girls try to be
Typical girls very well
Can't decide what clothes to wear

Typical girls are sensitive
Typical girls are emotional
Typical girls are cruel and bewitching
But she's a femme fatal

Typical girls stand by their man
Typical girls are really swell
Typical girls learn how to act shocked
Typical girls don't rebel

Who invented the typical girl?
Who's bringing out the new improved model?
And there's another marketing ploy
Typical girl gets the typical boy

Who invented the typical girl?
Who's bringing out the new improved model?
And there's another marketing ploy
Typical girl gets the typical boy, typical boy

The typical boy gets the typical girl
The typical girl gets the typical boy
The typical boy gets the typical girl
The typical girl gets the typical boy

Dead Kennedys

That name alone will conjure up some memories. It is brilliant and a complete indictment on American society

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables

It's been 28 years since I heard this record for the first time and it is the first punk rock record I ever heard

My best friend played it for me and it was something I had never experienced before. It was a direct blast right into my veins. The sarcastic wit and pissed off energy changed my life forever

Fast forward a few months and me and my friends from the Barossa ditched school and went to the newly built Kidman Park skate park

We expected to skate it by ourselves since it was a school day but when we got there we were a bit dismayed to see two other people there, especially considering we had never skated anything like that before

We were pretty shocked to see somebody, about our age and shirtless and without pads completely destroy that capsule/bowl in a way we had never seen before

The lines he carved and the ferocity he showed in attacking the lip, Those 50's and lay backs still stand out as one of the most awesome displays of controlled aggression I have ever seen

And in the background played Fresh Fruit....

I'm certain I am no longer a BBQer

But I am certain Talking Heads are punk as fuck

Sometimes there is a song that sums up the dichotomy and conflict of your life

Well, shit, there can be several, It all depends on.... whatever

Right now it is Showdown by Propagandhi

I used to love this band and they were far more potent and relevant when John K. Samson was in the band. I do like Todd The Rodd but it is just not the same

We spoke our minds too clearly.
We assumed fundamental rights were inherent
not as pawns but humyns.
I do not require a gauge for freedom of speech
cuz I never asked to be a citizen.
I never have and never will pledge allegiance.
Waking up each morning with confusion in my eyes.
The wind is biting through to wave "hello".
Seeing my reflection, an exterior of lies.
I hope this shaky feeling doesn't show.
As if I had to tell you there was little left to say.
Stilted conversations colored blue.
You were sitting down and you got up to walk away.
I tried to stay but I was right behind you.
Tension in the stair, I cannot bear so close to helpless
as this song I sing. Inside me ring.
Final words are boring, never touch,
I know you whispered something in my ear.
I couldn't hear you.
Girls with the greenest eyes. The first time you have kissed.
Our quiet softest sighs.
A song for all of those who shot and missed.
Welcomed to this world, imputed identity.
Born, tagged, tattooed, pacified.
Generously bestowed my rights and privileges replete.
Arbitrary values ascribed.
There's nothing I can tell you. There's nothing I can say.
Stunted conversation, censored thought.
I'm completely free, at liberty, guaranteed
Unless of course you decide I'm not.
But I'll not be resigned to, fall in line behind you.
Tension in the air I cannot bear
So what the fuck am I accomplishing? Absolutely nothing.
All these words are boring, it's time for action.
But you've taught me to be a pawn.
It won't last for long.
Those who see through the lies are quickly gagged and bound.

John K. Samson brought a humanity to the rest of the bands overt anarchism. What the fuck is wrong with Canadians? He continues to make music and The Weakerthans remain one of my fave bands of all time

Propaghandi are now really boring and completely irrelevant but they did record "How To Clean a Coupla Things" and "How To Clean Everything" and"Less Talk, More Rock"

Yep, I'm pissed and listening to music

Flycop

This Sydney powerhouse of powerviolence were great. The music is cool but what made this band stand out was the front woman

Rena

After Flycop broke up Rena moved to Adelaide and started a band called Yokel

Fuck they were great, but Rena had her own agenda. Every punk rocker with a penis was scorned, mocked and belittled. We loved it

On stage she was a firebrand, spitting venom and hate like a king brown snake. Off stage she was the kindest and friendliest person you could hope to meet

In many respects it is unfair to speak of such great bands and reduce it to a single person but in this instance it is totally justified. If you saw her perform her art of punk rock you may agree

Not the best rep but you get the idea

Yokel, " Punk Sucks"

https://youtu.be/1aRYRTFZG_Q

Flycop, Spagnallo. Side A

https://youtu.be/p4DV6GYjgY0

Spagnallo was their only recording, except for a few tracks on some very obscure V/A stuff

Interesting trivia fact. The guy on drums for Yokel did most of my tatts

We need to talk about NOFX

Well that is blatantly untrue, I want to talk about NOFX, and protest records

First NOFX

There will never be a more troublesome and polarising band than this for punks

Too many conversations about this band and whether I like them. The point of asking is to gauge your level of "punkness" and if it is acceptable to others in the local scene

The lyrical content ranges from the absurd to the overtly political. Everything from homelessness to defense of pornography to U.S. foreign policy is discussed with a snarkiness and cynical wit that gets lost on some of the more hardcore punks who were not born with a sense of humour in the first place. Nothing is sacred, including the pious political dogma of punk

I like em and the next time I go to a gig and get asked if I do I will punch that person in the throat

Punk rock needs bands like NOFX and if anybody tells me their cover of Fleetwood Mac "Go Your Own Way" isn't completely awesome then they had it coming

Protest records are rare in punk. By its very nature it kinda rules them out. When every song is in itself a protest against something it kinda loses any impact. If there is one thing the hippies got right it was how to make a protest record

But when punk makes a protest record, they completely nail it

Two records stand out

Dead Kennedys "In God We Trust Inc".

15 minutes of the most pissed off music you will ever hear, culminating in the song "We Have A Bigger Problem Now"

Strangely relevant again as the small handed, but he assures you he has a big penis #makedonalddrumpfagain gains ascendency

This next band, WOW!! If you want to know the definition of sedition then look no further than AusRotten

They are not from Aust. They are from Pennsylvania. Everything they did was to smash the system and they did it brilliantly

But their most Important record "The System Works For Them" is being repressed!!

I have an original copy from Tribal War released in '96 that I treasure. There must be changes because what they wrote then would get you put in jail today

Ausrotten

https://youtu.be/_ho2kFJDYZY

and some songs from NOFX I REALLY like this trilogy

https://youtu.be/rHBM-du4AD8

https://youtu.be/-k2gF_Eajpo
