Toe to toe now there's a cd I haven't listened to in a while. I used to love going to see Aussie bands every weekend back in the 90s like hard ons, meanies, tumbleweed and being from Brisbane dreamkillers were pretty big for us up here. I didn't realise guttermouth were touring that would've been a good gig I'm not sure if they played up here. If you like carcass Matt you might enjoy Dead Kelly from Sunshine Coast this clip has an Anzac touch but is not for everyone.

I've seen steel panther the last couple of times they've toured apart from soundwave and they put an awesome show. Their lyrics and get up are hilarious they're a piss take on glam metal.

Love my metal.

This is about as metal as I get but when it is this good...

My favourite genre in punk is powerviolence. I love the name, many do not and it is not a genre without it's share of controversy. The early stuff was made by people with deep seeded psychological problems that was being medicated with heavy drug use and who listened to Ozzy and Slayer. It was nihilistic and misanthropic and scummy. Poor production values adds to the air of menace that these records deliver

By the mid '90's though the suburban kids got a hold of this music and it was diluted forever. The politics of punk took over and all that scumminess was gone. Records are still being made and called powerviolence and there is a bit of a revival of the original sound but it can never recapture the crushing pain and angst of the original bands and a bit hard to take too seriously

Anyway, here are my top three

Siege- Dropdead

Not strictly a powerviolence record but this album from 1984 is THE template for the sound. That and grindcore/fastcore. This is the only recorded music from this awesome band

No Comment- Downsided

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChXbgu0ELT4

Copied and pasted from the Metal Inquisition blog because I could not have said it any better

"This is the soundtrack to having the fucking gun in your mouth, razor at your wrist, or rope around your neck. It's also arguably the best hardcore record ever made, no joke. Think of it as the desperation and despair of Black Flag "Damaged" with the pacing of early Napalm Death"

Cry Now, Cry Later Vol 1 & 2- Various

No Youtube vid for this album which is a shame because it really is amazing. So many great bands and captures so well that scummy sound

Honourable mentions to Man Is The Bastard, Despise You, Crossed Out, Apartment 213, Infest and from the new breed ACxDC, Chest Pain, Sordo, XbrainiaX and a Canadian band

You know what's funny though, I wrote this while listening to Crystal Castles but that's for another day

How does one try to define a band like The Raincoats. Music is such a visceral thing and this band captures it brilliantly. In the early '90's their two records, self titled debut of 1979 and 'Odyshape" from 1981 were re released and Kurt Cobain wrote in the liner notes

"I don't really know anything about The Raincoats except that they recorded some music that has affected me so much that, whenever I hear it I'm reminded of a particular time in my life when I was (shall we say) extremely unhappy, lonely, and bored. If it weren't for the luxury of putting that scratchy copy of The Raincoats' first record, I would have had very few moments of peace. I suppose I could have researched a bit of history about the band but I feel it's more important to delineated the way I feel and how they sound. When I listen to The Raincoats I feel as if I'm a stowaway in an attic, violating and in the dark. Rather than listening to them I feel like I'm listening in on them. We're together in the same old house and I have to be completely still or they will hear me spying from above and, if I get caught - everything will be ruined because it's their thing."

When I listen to them I am reminded of the fantastic people who introduced me to this band and of the great times we had together. I am both nostalgic and pensive and also filled with joy for that time we got to share something as amazing as this and those memories are kept alive by this music

If there is only one song I got to listen to for the rest of my life it would be this one

Another great song

"A genius is a person who displays exceptional superior intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of new advances in a domain of knowledge"

The term genius gets bandied about far too often for my liking. People like Edison, Einstein and Hawking are usually given the mantle of genius but none of them could ever hold a candle to this guy. THIS GUY INVENTED THE POWER CHORD ON GUITAR!!! Without it punk rock would not exist. This is not punk rock. This is Link Wray

Dear Wanda

15 years have past since I first met you but I am sure for you it seems like 55. The amazing thing is you have not aged a day. Your siren song has lured me in and I am captivated and mesmerized and under your spell

You continue to thrill and excite me. Your voice can sound scolding and harsh at times and at others it is warm and soothing. You are unique and as much as I want to keep you to myself, I know it would be cruel and unkind not to share your majesty with others

Your Slavish Devotee

I come across this guy, years ago if you haven't seen him already he's known as "the drummer at the wrong gig"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4v87aiMM4A

I love what this guy does with stringed instruments, he has plenty of clips to look at with different instruments and songs.
