Oil + heaps of heat and they will be fine.
if you REALLY want to fix em up build a wood fire and throw them in. once fire cools remove, give them a scrub then spray with oil

You are thinking of electrolysis... works wonders, especially on heavy corrosion. Here's a link...

A good wire brushing... and then naval jelly or CLR to get the metal bare.(brush on, then brush off, wire brush or drill head brush)
Then I get good and hot, and layer on a brushing of peanut oil. You dont have to do this over the cooker... you can do it in a 350 degree oven
Heat to 350 for 45-60 min, then shut off and let cool. as the surface loses it sheen, one more coat of peanut oil while it is still hot.

Depending on how you use it ( over direct coals) you will want to use a high heat oil for seasoning. After once or twice through the process noted above you should have a nice layer of seasoning going. It will blacken over time... and you should only need to reseason occasionally.

Coconut oil, peanut, grapeseed, avacado are all good for this purpose. You want to stay away from olive oil. the burn point is too low. That canola oil will work also... if you can get the high heat version even better. Sometimes that spray can get tacky on the surface... so a little coarse salt scrub or blue scotchbrite will fix it right up.
